Palm Sunday evening at Emmanuel Mennonite Church in Winkler was an evening of choral music. Prairie Singers and Winkler Community Male Choir joined forces to present an evening of music ranging from the Classical period right through to 20th century. The house was filled to the maximum capacity possible, with extra seating needing to be set up to accommodate everyone.
Prairie Singers began the evening’s performance with ‘Gloria in Excelsis’ and ending with the gospel swing of ‘Heaven Somewhere’.
Their performance was followed by the Winkler Community Male Choir and they continued that gospel music feel ending with a tribute to Abe Wieler, a long-time choir member who recently passed away. The tribute selection was ‘I’ll be There in Glory’.
Then the two choirs joined together and began with the familiar ‘Heilig’ from Shubert’s ‘Deutch Messe’. Ray Giesbrecht and Loretta Thorliefsen shared conducting duties through the four selections and the evening ended with the rousing gospel song ‘Every Time I Feel the Spirit’.
Both directors had earlier expressed the desire to do collaborative work with each other and it was the delight of the Eden organization to be able to help bring the two choirs together. It was a fund-raising event for Eden Health Care Services and the community proved generous again with over $13,000 being raised for mental health services. The event proved the concert title in that the choirs together, along with those who came were ‘In Harmony for Hope’.
